Visit to IGAFA - Galiza, Spain

14.07.2022

On the 7th of July, representatives of Ernesto São Simão visited the premises of IGAFA – Instituto Galego de Formácion en Acuicultura, within the scope of the ERGOMARINE project, of the Blue Growth program, a project financed by EEA Grants Portugal and operated by DGPM - Direção-Geral de Política do Mar.

Received by Director Miguel Lastres, who guided the visit to the site and to the floating installations (mollusc batea and experimental fish farming cages – sea bream) and to the tanks (RAS) for the reproduction/creation of seeds of various species, namely clams and crustaceans. The phytoplankton used to feed the different creations is also produced in the laboratory at IGAFA in transparent columns containing sea water and exposed to solar radiation and also ultraviolet radiation.

We also verified that more than 90% of the bateas installed in the Ria de Arousa are dedicated to the culture of mussels by suspension of the species “Mytilus gallopronvincialis”, of excellent flavor, native to the coasts of Galicia (mejillón de Galicia) and northern Portugal.

In this pleasant and enriching visit, the possibility of a future collaboration was discussed with a view to the use of ERGOMARINE products, new applications and opportunities for improvement. ERGOMARINE cages were offered to be tested in a natural environment by IGAFA and, later, to obtain feedback and discuss the results obtained.
